Dallas Personal Injury Firm Feizy Law Office Provides Professional Advice on What to Do in an Auto Accident

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) March 29, 2009

Auto accidents are a common, daily occurrence, and though the severity of property damage and injury varies, the actions of those involved in an accident – whether a car accident, truck accident, motorcycle accident, 18-wheeler accident or fatal car wreck – should always be the same. So says lawyer Nick Feizy of Feizy Law Office, a Dallas-based personal injury litigation law firm. To inform the public of the best cause of action to take in the event of any auto accident, Feizy offers five tips:

1. Remain calm and don’t leave the scene of the accident. After a collision, try not to move your vehicle until the police arrive in order to allow the policeman to survey the scene and preserve the evidence. If the vehicle must be moved (in the event of emergencies, danger to yourself or others, etc.) try to move it the shortest distance possible from the place of impact.

2. Contact the police department immediately. Calling the police department is an especially important step if drivers or passengers feel any pain or injury as a result of a car accident, truck accident, motorcycle accident or any other collision. Remember, if there is a dispute later, the other driver in the accident may have a completely different story when the matter reaches court than the one that he or she states at the scene of the accident. The police accident report is also a helpful tool in establishing liability (who’s at fault).

3. Go to the hospital. Many people, even when they feel pain, will refuse medical attention at the scene and travel home. Then, after several hours of increasing pain, they will finally go to the hospital and present themselves at the emergency room or choose to go to the chiropractor or other medical provider. Any delay in seeking medical attention is often used by insurance companies as a weapon to prove that the accident did not cause the injury. If you feel pain at the scene of a car accident, motorcycle accident, 18-wheeler accident or any other collision, use ambulance services to immediately go to the closest emergency room. Also, follow up medical care may be necessary.

4. Acquire information pertinent to the accident. Obtain the other driver’s name, address, telephone number, driver’s license number, license plate number, name of insurance company and policy number. Then, write down names of passengers, including their addresses and phone numbers. Make sure to have all the names, addresses and phone numbers of all witnesses. If the owner of the other vehicle is different than the driver, obtain the owner’s name, address, phone number, insurance company and policy number. If a police officer arrives at the scene of the accident and prepares a police report properly, this information will be reflected on the accident report.

5. Do not admit responsibility for the accident. The things said immediately following a motorcycle accident, truck accident or any other accident or fatal car wreck may be used against you during the course of litigation. Oftentimes drivers are not sure who caused the accident and will find out differently once all the evidence has been presented.
