Bmw Launches New Ad Campaign for Performance Driving School 9

Posted on March 09, 2011 by Automotive News

BMW recently launched its new performance driving campaign that features offbeat characters from driving lessons past. The campaign, launched for the BMW Performance Driving School in Spartanburg, South Carolina, aims to bring the goals of the school to life by posing the query: “Who taught you to drive?”

BMW of North America will encourage drivers to consider how times have changed since their first lesson, and who taught them. Through non-branded micro-site and viral videos, BMW of North America in cooperation with Austin-based GSD&M, a leading marketing and communications company, tackled more than just what car to drive as it launches the “Relearn to Drive” campaign.

The campaign will take visitors to www.RelearnToDrive.com, zeroing in on the idea that much of what drivers originally learned was incorrect or no longer applies, and the BMW Performance Driving School is the place to correct those wrongs.

“Many drivers on the road today have not considered just how times — and cars — have changed since they learned to drive, and this campaign will serve as an entertaining wake-up call that perhaps we could all stand to learn something new,” said Jack Pitney, Vice President, Marketing, BMW of North America. “Increasing awareness of the programs we offer at the BMW Performance Driving School will let people know there is a fun way to hone those skills we all may have to use one day, no matter what kind of car they drive.”

The campaign appears in select auto and lifestyle publications, such as Roundel, Autoweek and Road and Track. It will also be published online via AutoWeek.com and RacingSchools.com. YouTube and Google Video will also feature the campaign. What’s more, it will be printed on postcards distributed at BMW events nationwide this summer. In addition, the campaign will also appear in The Onion, online and in print, as part of its sponsorship.

The “Relearn to Drive” website features videos of nine unconventional, panicky characters that capture the multitude of ways individuals may have been taught to drive. They include the following:

- Mom insists that her son must always use two feet when driving, despite what his father tells him;

- Dad, nervous with clipboard and checklist in hand, gives his son a strict lesson;

- Grandpa, dressed in his old military uniform, says it’s time to teach his grandson to be a man, and driving a car is “just like driving a submarine — except the car isn’t packed with torpedoes;”

Visitors to the site will also be able to send customized email postcards with video to friends and family. In a separate section of the web site, information and high-quality video footage of the BMW Performance Driving School in action will be available.

The German automaker is famed for the manufacture of trusted BMW M5 parts and other auto accessories and equipment. “BMW’s commitment to great ideas goes beyond engineering the best automobiles – they’re dedicated to improving the entire driving experience,” said John McGrath, vice president of Communications for GSD&M. “This interactive campaign is a humorous look at how most of us got started behind the wheel and highlights the opportunity to relearn those skills and upgrade the pleasure of driving.”

The goal of the campaign is to increase awareness of the BMW Performance Center and BMW Performance Driving School – a 134-acre, high-tech driving facility set with closed courses, skid pad, water walls, and an off-road course. The Driving School offers several programs, including one- and two-day Driving Schools, one- and two-day Teen Driving schools, one- and two-day M Schools for high-performance driving, and an Advanced M School.

The BMW Sauber F1 Team raised the curtain on its 2009 season in Formula One in Valencia, Spain with Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld unveiling the new BMW Sauber F1.09, followed by Robert Kubica doing the first laps with the new car. Development work on the new car began as long ago as February 2008 because of the major rule changes that were agreed with a completely new aerodynamic package, slick tires and the introduction of KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System). BMW says it has worked hard to reduce weight in the car to allow the KERS system to be added without losing the ability to have ballast.

Bmw Launch ?test Pilot? TV Commercial for New M3 15

Posted on February 25, 2011 by Automotive News

Last August 19, 2007 BMW launched its ad campaign for the M3. It’s a 50-second TV commercial showing BMW’s M3 in flight. This TV ad is the only one of its kind created for the new BMW M3 worldwide.

The commercial is entitled “Test Pilot” and shows a man who seems to be training as a fighter pilot. This TV ad was created by Ireland/Davenport and was shot in Orlando, south of Johannesburg.

The hero in the commercial has undergone strenuous examinations with the final test to be conducted on a new BMW M3 with quality BMW door handle. The commercial ends with a pay-off line that states: “The new BMW M3. The Spirit of M. Unleashed by technology”

According to Philip Ireland, the bright mind behind the advertisement, “The BMW M3 is the ultimate performance vehicle but, more than just highlighting the pure brawn, we needed to emphasize the intelligent design and technology that enables the vehicle to do what it does. We wanted to show the IQ that went into the development of the new BMW M3.”

John Davenport also said, “The BMW M3 has a performance heritage which is made possible by the extreme technological superiority and advanced innovation of the vehicle. With this in mind we thought the best way to convey the matchless driving experience of a BMW M3 would be through the intense physical and mental experiences that the driver would undergo to be able to cope with this type of driving experience.”

The TV ad is just a part of the integrated campaign that includes print, outdoor, radio, online and other direct marketing campaigns developed for the promotion of BMW’s new M3. Ireland/Davenport has also worked with BMW’s digital agency, Aqua Online which makes sure that the whole concept and idea is taken to every aspect of the campaign. It was Kevin Fitgerald of Egg Films that directed the commercial.

In making the commercial the crew has met some problems along the way fortunately for them they were not severe so the shooting has gone ahead as schedule. Ireland was quoted by Marketingweb as saying: “During filming of the high speed shots we found that the tracking vehicle at its absolute top-speed was unable to keep up with the BMW M3 in order to film the shots. So, in the end, a second BMW M3 had to be brought in to become the tracking vehicle!”

Both of the BMW’s above-the-line and below-the-line businesses are to be handled by Ireland/Davenport. And to further attract customers there would also be a “Star City Cosmonaut” online competition wherein one entrant will be given the rare opportunity to visit Star City, Russia which is a highly controlled military facility located north of Moscow where cosmonauts are trained at the Gagarin Cosmonauts Training Center since 1960s. In addition the winner will also get the chance to ride in a MIG fighter jet.

Question by ggpwned: Do the brakes apply while the BMW M5 (E60) launch control is activated (car is at a standstill)?
I am thinking about trying out the launch control on the 2006 BMW M5 (E60). My M5 has a 7-speed SMG transmission but I was wondering if the brakes will apply when launch control is activated (when the car is at a standstill). For example, if i activate launch control and prep the car for launch, and the car is at a standstill, will the car roll around if it was placed on a steep surface? Or will the brakes apply until I release the gear lever that allows the car to launch?

Best answer:

Answer by Sunny D
i dont believe that the bakes apply because i have seen some other cars the have launch control and require brakes to be applied at the same time. but maybe bmw has a different type of launch control.

Question by Mark: BMW 335xi fastest launch possible?
i was wondering in my 2008 steptronic 335xi if i turn the traction control off and at a stop push the break down and rev it and release the break, will it launch any faster? and if so, how bad is it for the car? i dont want any answers like this is a waste of tires or something like that, i know its the all wheel drive but is there anyway to still do a burnout in it? im just curios. thanks. additionally if this isn’t the fastest possible launch can someone please tell me what it would be in this car.

Best answer:

Answer by Mark S
I would not recommend doing burn outs in a all wheel drive car. your best launch time will be with the traction control on. Its designed for best response time

Bmw Launches The Improved X5 For 2010 16

Posted on February 04, 2011 by Automotive News

A revised version of the BMW X5 will go on sale in June this year, with a new range of cleaner engines, more standard equipment and updated looks. With a market launch of 5 June 2010 the BMW X5 will receive a mid lifecycle “refresh”. This includes changes to the engine line-up, exterior styling and standard & optional equipment. This comprehensive package of changes further strengthens the position of the X5 within its class and make the BMW X5 an excellent choice for leasing and finance

The original BMW X5 hit the streets in 1999, whilst in 2007, BMW launched the second-generation X5 in answer to competition from the Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. What changes can we expect from the latest version which will be launched on June 5th 2010?

The most obvious change is the new styling. At the front, there are revised bumpers and new headlights, while the fog lights are mounted more centrally. Likewise, the rear has new light clusters, larger tailpipes and a redesigned bumper. At the same time, equipment levels across the range have been improved. The choice of SE and M Sport trims remains, but every model now comes with xenon headlamps and leather upholstery, while Lane Departure Warning, Active Cruise Control and side-view cameras are available as options.

Design highlights, Exterior:

Front:
- Re-styled front bumper (with more body colour on SE model)
- Enlarged air intake vents
- Re-positioned front fog lights – New xenon headlights with bright white LED corona rings.

Rear:
- Re-styled rear bumper (with more body colour on SE model)
- New rear light clusters featuring LED glowing light bars

Alloy wheel programme:
- New standard 19” wheel for xDrive50i SE model – New standard 19” wheel for dynamic package – New optional 20” wheels for all models

Engine Changes:

Every BMW X5 model now also has an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which combines with the new engines to give better performance and lower emissions on both of the new diesel engines.

The range still starts with the xDrive30d, but the engine is now more powerful than before, cutting half a second off the 0-60mph time. However, at the same time, CO2 emissions are also down – to 195g/km.

The new xDrive40d replaces the xDrive35d, and also combines more power and stronger performance with lower emissions and better economy. It emits 198g/km of CO2, while averaging 37.7mpg.

At the top of the range is the X5’s only petrol engine, the xDrive50i, which has over 50bhp more than the old xDrive48i – and takes a second less to reach 60mph as a result.

Summary:

For many people the BMW X5 remains the best luxury off-road 4×4 on the market. Because on the road, nothing else sits this high, looks as good or drives so well. The BMW X5 offers superior driving dynamics and a plush interior. Couple this with BMW’s long history of the X5 and being the ultimate driving machine, you cannot help but give the X5 M a serious look! One of the best performing SUVs on the road.

Question by Bob S: How do I properly use the launch control feature in my 2002 BMW m3 with SMG?
I just purchased a bmw m3 with smg.
I heard that this car has launch control, a bit limited in US, but its still there. Does anyone know how to use this? I have the sport button, smg control, and a dsc button. Also have the paddle shifters, and am driving pretty good with them now.
Also, I understand that this may be bad for the tranny, but I still want to know how to do it.
Thanks to all!

Best answer:

Answer by Phillip S
There are several ways to initiate “launch control” on the older M-3 cars with SMG. One way is to sit in a wide open parking lot with lots of space and no traffic. With the engine runnning, clutch disengaged, first gear selected via manual gearshift, press gearshift forward against detent, rev engine to about 5000 RPM, release gearshift and give full gas simultaneously, then hold on for the launch of your life. Transmission failure, or any driveline component, (clutch, U-joints, or driveshaft) may be on your next inspection and repair bill. BMW does not warrant their vehicles against these kinds of activities.
