The Governor of California had passed rulings for the BIG THREE to come up with a low emission or NO emission car by 1998 or non of Ford, Chevy, or Chrysler could sell a car in that state. Emission testing has gone on for years and SMOG is becoming a big problem in high population cities. There is documented proof of prototype cars and fuel systems that can deliver 100 miles per gallon. If this was fully launched, what do you think would happen to the gasoline industry? Toyota was just following what the other manufacturers were doing but “timing and marketing” caused Prius sales to sky rocket. A lot of Prius owners do not understand that FREEWAY driving is not what the car was intended for. Only stop and go traffic allows the Regenerative Braking System to function as designed. There is one fellow that took a VW Jetta and changed the injection system so it would burn Used Cooking Grease. He got decent mileage and the only side affect was that the exhaust smelt like french fries.
